How Do You Keep Your Blonde Locks Healthy & Strong?

Updated: Feb 16, 2023

Blondes... it's true when they say they really do have more fun!

What they don't say is that having blonde hair can be a real hassle - if you aren't armed with the right advice and the right products.

From the stress of the natural elements, such as water, sun and air pollution, to over styling and processing your hair that leaves your locks dry and susceptible to breakage, your blonde hair can take a serious beating!

Step 1: Keep it Hydrated

As a blonde, it's safe to say your hair has been through the wringer. Going blonde or maintaining a bold blonde look can be an incredibly harsh process that strips the hair of many oils and nutrients - leaving us with brittle, dry and vulnerable hair. Processed hair needs a lot of love.

For blondes it's crucial to have high quality and hydrated products that bring moisture back to the hair. Deep treatments and hair masques are a great way to restore stripped moisture.

Step 2: Protect it from the Heat

If you're an avid styler, you're not going to like our next message.. but the less heat styling, the better!

Having a lighter hair colour required your hair cuticle to be stripped. Once the cuticle has been stripped, it makes it difficult for the hair to hold onto nutrients that your scalp produces, which leaves your hair brittle and dry.

Adding an excessive amount of heat styling to your hair on top of this process can really damage your hair!

If you can't let go of the blow dryer, try giving your hair a heat vacation from time to time, using soft and gentle hair styles to give your hair a well deserved break (check out Step 5 below for a few hair style suggestions).

If you seriously can't let go of the heat, be sure to have a high quality heat protectant spray when styling your hair and continue your deep conditioning treatments frequently!

Step 3: Use a Purple Shampoo

Purple shampoo is an absolute necessity for blondes to use in between hair coloring sessions as it easily helps keeps your blonde beautiful.

Purple shampoo is just that—a shampoo with purple pigments that helps to keep undertones at bay.

Natural or dyed hair, both can benefit from the help of a bit of purple shampoo. It helps alleviate the brassy tones in your hair, helping you stay blonder for longer.

It works because purple tones yellow, gold and brassy hair. It's also good for grey hair that can attract yellowing!

Some of our clients shampoo regimes can vary, and we recommend toning products either every wash, alternate wash or as needed. It's best to get individual advice from your stylist before using your purple shampoo.

Step 4: Add a Treatment to Your Weekly Hair Care Regimen

What's better than a Purple Shampoo, a good hair treatment!

If you have a natural blonde colour, you might find that your hair is finer than other hair times and can often seem duller if you don't look after it. Similarly but on a much larger scale, processed and chemical blondes are vulnerable to becoming easily damaged and fine, so it's important to pick a hair treatment that has active ingredients that will help to deep condition your hair and repair it from within.

Step 5: Try Softer Hair Styles

Soft hair styles can be of great benefit to blondes who not only process their hair constantly but also indulge in the occasion heat styling.

A loose braid, a low bun and using a hair scarf can take off some of the pressure and stress on blonde hair. We easily forget how often we have your hair tied up and out of the way, and having damaged and dry hair can mean tying up your hair with regular fabric or elastic hair ties can cause further stretching and damage to the brittle strands.

Step 6: Stick to your Hair Stylists Recommended Colour Regime

At the end of the day, the very best way to keep your blonde looking bold and lush is to keep with your recommended hair colour plan outlined by your Hair Stylist.

This is said for all blonde types, whether you have foils, bleach blonde hair or just touch up your regrowth, nothing is as effective as maintaining your hair colour appointments.

Your Hair Stylist will assess your colour, provide the necessary colour service to get your hair back to its desired look and style, while also looking at the quality and strength of your hair.

These appointments are a great opportunity to talk to your Stylist about any concerns you may have about your hair quality, damage and talk about relevant products that can work to minimise the effect of the processing treatment and work to restore vitality and strength to your hair.

Now you can keep your blonde locks looking like you've just stepped out of the salon! Be sure to take great care of your blonde hair, and give it some much needed love and care!
